- I've got the Sportster Vi and overall it's worked pretty good for me. It
- does not have speakerphone capability but the voice mail seems to work
- pretty good. The quality of the recorded messages has been good for me
- but I've heard others complain about theirs. You are limited to 10 voice
- mail boxes but this is not an issue for me because I use it only as an
- answering machine. The software has the ability to page your beeper when
- you get a call but I have not personally used this feature. It can
- distinguish between voice and fax calls but if you want it to answer data
- calls you have to change the answer mode to data. The current version of
- Quicklink won't do allthree at once.
-
- The modem itself establishes good consistent connections and I haven't had
- a problem with disconnects. I usually connect at 26400 to my ISP and I've
- stayed connected for hours without losing the connection. Using the
- Windows 95 system monitor, I'm seeing transfer rates of 3K bytes or a
- little more for ZIP files. For data that is compressable I've seen much
- higher. One fluke I've seen with Windows 95 is that it won't do binary
- transfers (ZIP files or GIF images in Netscape) with the FIFO buffer
- enabled. But when you disable the FIFO buffer then everything works. I
- haven't figured this one out yet and I have left a message with tech
- support at the USR BBS but haven't got an answer yet.
-
- Which leads to another topic, USR tech support is way behind on answering
- messages and providing help. I don't know the reason for this but they
- claim to be trying to get more help and get caught up. In the past people
- have said USR had great tech support. So I don't know if sales have went
- through the roof and they're trying to catch up or if there are other
- issues involved. The point is don't expect much help from USR tech
- support right now if you buy one of their products. Hopefully this will
- change in the future.
-
- If your main requirements are voice features then there are probably
- better voice modems you can get. Check into the Cardinal MVP288IS or Zoom
- Comstar 620. But if modem performance is more important and you don't
- need a lot of help from tech support then the Sportster Vi might be worth
- checking into. The reviews I've read claim that the Sportsters have
- better throughput and establish higher speed connections than most
- Rockwell based modems plus the USR's data pump code is upgradebale along
- with the control code. This is why you can upgrade a Sportster to 33.6
- with a firmware upgrade. With a Rockwell based modem you have to send it
- to the factory to upgrade data pump code.
-
- Anyhow this is my experience with the modem. Hope this helps.
